PHARA decides to move forward with TJYBB

The PHARA Board and TJYBB are saddened to learn that Jefferson Hills Baseball Association, at their last board meeting voted to no longer be associated with TJYBB. As the 2008 TJYBB baseball season came to an end it became apparent that the future of the merged organizations of Jefferson Hills Baseball Association (JHBA) and the Pleasant Hills Recreation Association (PHARA) was in jeopardy. On 30-June -2008 a PHARA executive board member sent an e-mail to the acting JHBA president asking what needed to be done to keep the players of West Elizabeth, Jefferson Borough and Pleasant Hills together to play baseball in the future.

A list was sent back from the acting JHBA President with the following that needed to occur to keep JHBA from pulling out of the TJYBB:

· One Board overseeing, Spring Ball, All Stars, Fall Ball and in place around Oct/Nov and can consist of 5 to 7 people.

· In house play ups.
· In house rule changes.
· Play offs for Minors and Majors.
· All Star Manager picked earlier in the in house season, JH recommends the All Star Manager voted on NLT May 15th.
· How All Star teams are chosen
· For those having All Star tryouts, they should be scheduled early June while school is still in.

In order to allow all the youths the ability to participate in playing baseball together PHARA agreed to all the demands of JHBA, although some were believed to not be in the best interest of an instructional, recreational league. PHARA asked in return that the in-house season would end in late June, late games during school nights would be limited, games played on Saturdays and the board that is to be put into place be under the PHARA umbrella such as football and softball operate. JHBA replied that they would not commit to making those decisions.

This past September PHARA announced a meeting to discuss the future of baseball in our communities. At that meeting volunteers came forward by signing a list to possibly be considered as potential board members of the not yet formed TJYBB board. JHBA took the position that all who proffered their names should be members of the future board. PHARA countered that the initial board should be comprised of 3 members from PHARA and 3 members from JHBA. Those six original members would then choose the seventh member. PHARA took the position that the board members should not have been limited to the names on the list from the September meeting.

Apparently not willing to concede, JHBA by a vote of 6-NO, 1-YES, 1-Abstention elected to disassociate themselves from TJYBB.

Let Them Play!
By Cal and Bill Ripken
The tendency among all coaches – especially those at the younger levels – is to feel a need to insert themselves into the game more than is necessary. Coaches by nature are teachers, and they often feel that if they aren’t instructing their players at every opportunity or calling all the shots all the time they aren’t doing their job. This often leads to over-coaching and situations in which the players are overloaded with information and can’t perform to the best of their ability. The truth is that the best coaches resist the urge to tinker and teach constantly, specifically during the heat of competition. These coaches observe first, make mental notes or put their observations on paper and teach only during times when their kids are capable of absorbing the information. We call these “teachable moments.” Read more...

Parentally Speaking April 14, 2008
By Cal Ripken, Jr.
Editor’s note: Each month in this space, Cal will address issues of concern to parents of young athletes. We hope that coaches, many of whom are parents, will find the information enlightening when it comes to working with their own children and dealing with the parents of the players on their teams. What are your thoughts on the five-tool rating system that is used by major league scouts, and which of those five tools do you think is most important for a young player to develop? Generally speaking I dislike the “five tools” terminology. I think that it is a way in which scouts can communicate and differentiate the talent level of various players in the game of baseball. In some ways it almost validates a scout’s worth to his organization. I value players who can hit, catch and throw well. It’s unfortunate, but the stopwatch and radar gun seem to overly excite scouts. In terms of raw ability, speed and a strong arm tend to grab a scout’s attention. That’s kind of sad to me, because the most important attributes in my mind are the ability to hit, throw and catch, and sometimes I feel like scouts get too excited in how they describe a player when it comes to the “five tools.” Read more...
